Fuller Brush or Snake Oil

I was having a wonderful conversation this morning with a friend of mine and was reminded of the difference between being a Fuller Brush Salesman or selling snake oil.   This is a obviously  metaphor.  Today’s fuller brush may actually sell a health and wellness product from any number of good companies.  The snake oil sales well there is any number of those as well.

It is the snake oil guy we had a conversation about this morning.  We had noticed a sudden influx of junk out there.  So I decide I what was needed was a beware of post of my own.  The thing is when finding a company to join ask yourself.   Do they have a real product.  A product is tangible.  You can hold it , smell it feel it maybe even taste it.  You can use it.  Other companies sell services like mine.  But again you can see it, use it and come back again and again to it.  Like your electricity, cable, water and gas.  All services all necessary to run a business.

Enter duh duh duh the snake oil dude.  Recreating something that is obtainable for free is not a product nor a service.  More importantly you should not pay for it.  Also ask yourself  what am I getting?  Is there another way to do this and will I benefit better if I go another route.  Sometimes we pay for things because of the ease of it and it saves us time.  That then is a service.  When the platform is actually out there already for free and you can do it taking the same amount of time.  Then it is not.

Example;  if there is a free services or for a small fee you get a service that will get you noticed on the web and eventually brand you.  It may take a while to do but it will work.   What is not right is paying someone else to duplicate and short cut this, than you go about doing it on some duplicated system thinking it is branding you, optimizing you when all it is doing is optimizing someone else, branding someone else and someone else will get rich for it.

There is another new one that is running around using a free social platform but they want to sell you affiliate positions in it to give you the information that is there available to you for free.  Come on for most of us working on the internet is not a game.  We take it seriously and more important we have worked hard very hard to be taken seriously and get out from under the stigma of the snake oil guy.

I do direct sales but have done network marketing in some capacity for many years.  I love the business that I promote and believe we give quality, content and help where we can.  We have great customer service.  I get excited about talking about either one of my business’s.  Whether it is the direct sale of Longaberger http://longaberger.com/cindyslick  or my marketing system which allows you to have your business all under one place. http://www.slideshare.net/cslickharris  Instead of like paying maybe vista print for one thing, constant contact for another, aweber for another with us it is all under one platform for less than any one of the others.  They all have a quality product.  I believe we have a better one. I should naturally because I stand behind mine.

The point is quality and about,  service, product with content and sustain ability.  The internet is a wonderful place full of wonderful business opportunities.  We choose the business we do for all kinds of reason.  Let one of them be, because you have a passion for the product or service, but please let the other one because you can honestly stand behind it.  Do not let an attractive compensation plan get in the way of your better judgment.  Do not become the sleezy snake oil guy be the Fuller Brush Salesman, or Sears salesman of days gone by.  We are hard-working individuals out here with integrity.

Have a great day today all,

Cindy Slick

  1. Thank-you Cindy. I think you’ve stated your points well and I approve and agree. There are types of businesses that many make money with that I just can’t become a part of. But still they can’t see why we don’t all join them. they say, “We’re making Big money ,” I say “What about the way you’re doing it and the way you take advantage of others?” They may have a legal business (barely) but it’s still about integrity. Building at the expense of others who put up their money only to fail is not a moral position to be taking their income from. Well their escape is to say “They could not help it if some did not follow through.” “It’s their own fault.” I’m sure you can understand for I’m sure you’ve seen many of these too. I’m just replying to say that I agree!
