Poppies, Poppies For Sale

Thanks For The Memories Grandma & Grandpa

american legion poppiesThe sounds and smells of summer bring back fond memories for me.  My mom being a single mom, during a time when single moms were not so common.  Most of my summer was spent with my grandparents.  Memorial Day Weekend sticks out as the first of many days spent with grandma.  We lived in the city and grandma lived in the country.  So that right there made it a treat.

I could wonder in the backyard for hours.  Coming in with Mulberry stained feet, to the sounds of dinner being made, and grandma scolding me for the Mulberry stains.  Just hearing dinner being made was a sound and smell that I rarely heard or smelled at home. My mom always worked so unless it was a big holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving my mom rarely was home to do those things.

My grandma volunteered for many organizations.  The American Legion was one of those that she did volunteer work for.  One thing was certain on Memorial Day weekend.  I would find myself in front of the local bank with a can in one hand and poppies in another.  Back in those days it was safe to leave an 8 year old with a can full of money for hours at a time alone.  She was certain I would be there safe and sound with a full can and no poppies left when she returned.  I just thought of it as good fun.  Proud that I could help out my grandma, never really knowing why  I was standing there selling poppies. American Legion

The other memory of the first weekend of summer was going to the market and picking out what I now know as grave blankets.  We would pick out several for the deceased relatives, one being for my Uncle Lawrence who died in Germany flying his plane over enemy territory in WWII.  There was a just a marker where he should lay.  There were also two lambs in that graveyard.  One was for an Aunt of mine, who died when she was born.  And one for a cousin who had suffered the same faith.

I had no idea about the significance of those grave blankets. I just seen them as pretty flowers and really gave little thought to the cemetery itself.  It was just another place we frequently came to during the summer my grandma would be lost in thought as I ran around.  The Child in me never realizing my grandma was sadden to be standing before the graves of her children and grandchild.

I also knew we would be back later in the weekend because this is where the Memorial Day Parade would end.  My grandfather all dressed up in a uniform my grandma in her dress with a banner across her chest.  I knew I was proud of them both on those days.  Yet really have no idea why.  I do know that it was the beginning of my pride for America.  It was where my young child like brain began to absorb the significance of my Uncle giving his life for us.  Fighting in the military like my Grandfather had in WWI.  My Uncle did not come back from that war though.  My grandfather was luckieramerican-flag-11

To me as a child those poppies, the America Legion hall itself well they were little more than pretty flowers a can of money that was heavy by the end of the day.  The Legion hall was a fun place to be where grandpa played cards and women made great food.  They had walls full of pictures and plaques and lots of good smells and sounds.

Today those sounds echo in my brain and the smell of some food can bring back the images of those proud people that filled that hall.  They were working hard to make sure that the men and women that had fallen to keep America free were never forgotten.  My grandparents whether they knew it or not were instilling in me a pride that will never ever go away.  It can bring tears to this grown women’s eyes at the memories.  So today I give thanks to each and every one of those that have died for me.  For my nephew in the military that is a part of that proud tradition in our family.  Remember to not forget what this weekend is about.  Be thankful and have a wonderful holiday.

In loving memory of Carl and Lucille Ruckreigle

Make It About The Connection

Make It About The Connection

connectionsWe are taught all of lives about making social connections.  From the playground to the very first day in our first job we are told how important it is to make connections.  Never before is this more true and the internet makes this easier than ever before.  This is important for everyone no matter what you do for a living.  However if you are a business owner it is more important than ever before.

Business owners depend on visibility.  You need to be seen, you need to be noticed.  While the internet makes those two things easy to do.  Many fail to do that.  Thinking that placing a website up or doing a blog is enough. It is not enough and often they fail to do the basics.

Making connections is the fundamental start of all things.  You need to make it a habit each and ever day to form connections.  Myself I not only teach it to my team I practice it.  No matter what site I am on.  And through out each day I am on many, I form new connections.  I know just how important it is and know that just a few minutes taken out of my day  making connections has made all the difference in the world to my business.

In business numbers are everything.  Percentages in internet marketing are staggering. 97% attrition rate, 75% switch companies every 4 months.   So how do you beat the odds.  By increasing them in your favor, of course.  You need to be seen you want to be known so when someone goes looking for a company, yours in the one the come to.

Making connections is just one way to get your self seen.  The other way is having a way to market your primary business.  To do that you need capture pages not just one although that can be a start.  You need several and you need email campaigns so you stay in front of people.  Offer value and content so you need to have something besides your business to put in front of them.

While marketing with all those tools may seem like it will cost more than you have to spend if you are just starting out.  I know I thought so for far too long.  If you don’t do it many months or years later you will wish you had.  You know the saying you have to spend money  to make money.  In this case it is true.banner leads

Today  I would spend it in a heart beat to cut down the time it took me to make money online.  I could of cut the time in a half, maybe even more.  Today I have all those tools, with a system that has unlimited everything.  You are only limited by your imagination on how to market yourself.  They have over 30 free give a way’s too.  All for under 1 dollar a day.

For the brand new internet marketer, home base business owner they even have a free lead system forever that generates massive amounts of leads that could actually lead to getting the premium system for free too.  With three paying members that you bring in you get the premium with all the bells and whistle that you really need.

I am forever grateful I found this or I should say a friend introduce me.  Yes one of those connections I made on the internet.  The one’s I make it a habit of finding.  Today a new connection of yours is giving you the key to success on the internet.  Go out and make it a great day.

Fuller Brush or Snake Oil

I was having a wonderful conversation this morning with a friend of mine and was reminded of the difference between being a Fuller Brush Salesman or selling snake oil.   This is a obviously  metaphor.  Today’s fuller brush may actually sell a health and wellness product from any number of good companies.  The snake oil sales well there is any number of those as well.

It is the snake oil guy we had a conversation about this morning.  We had noticed a sudden influx of junk out there.  So I decide I what was needed was a beware of post of my own.  The thing is when finding a company to join ask yourself.   Do they have a real product.  A product is tangible.  You can hold it , smell it feel it maybe even taste it.  You can use it.  Other companies sell services like mine.  But again you can see it, use it and come back again and again to it.  Like your electricity, cable, water and gas.  All services all necessary to run a business.

Enter duh duh duh the snake oil dude.  Recreating something that is obtainable for free is not a product nor a service.  More importantly you should not pay for it.  Also ask yourself  what am I getting?  Is there another way to do this and will I benefit better if I go another route.  Sometimes we pay for things because of the ease of it and it saves us time.  That then is a service.  When the platform is actually out there already for free and you can do it taking the same amount of time.  Then it is not.

Example;  if there is a free services or for a small fee you get a service that will get you noticed on the web and eventually brand you.  It may take a while to do but it will work.   What is not right is paying someone else to duplicate and short cut this, than you go about doing it on some duplicated system thinking it is branding you, optimizing you when all it is doing is optimizing someone else, branding someone else and someone else will get rich for it.

There is another new one that is running around using a free social platform but they want to sell you affiliate positions in it to give you the information that is there available to you for free.  Come on for most of us working on the internet is not a game.  We take it seriously and more important we have worked hard very hard to be taken seriously and get out from under the stigma of the snake oil guy.

I do direct sales but have done network marketing in some capacity for many years.  I love the business that I promote and believe we give quality, content and help where we can.  We have great customer service.  I get excited about talking about either one of my business’s.  Whether it is the direct sale of Longaberger http://longaberger.com/cindyslick  or my marketing system which allows you to have your business all under one place. http://www.slideshare.net/cslickharris  Instead of like paying maybe vista print for one thing, constant contact for another, aweber for another with us it is all under one platform for less than any one of the others.  They all have a quality product.  I believe we have a better one. I should naturally because I stand behind mine.

The point is quality and about,  service, product with content and sustain ability.  The internet is a wonderful place full of wonderful business opportunities.  We choose the business we do for all kinds of reason.  Let one of them be, because you have a passion for the product or service, but please let the other one because you can honestly stand behind it.  Do not let an attractive compensation plan get in the way of your better judgment.  Do not become the sleezy snake oil guy be the Fuller Brush Salesman, or Sears salesman of days gone by.  We are hard-working individuals out here with integrity.

Have a great day today all,

Cindy Slick
